This 22-credit certificate is designed to equip working teachers with the highly effective instructional skills, strategies, and interpersonal knowledge to teach students with diverse learning needs. The program emphasizes differentiated instruction, curriculum modifications, positive behavioral supports, collaboration, assistive technology, and literacy instruction. All courses are offered online, with synchronous Zoom meetings held in the evenings. The program follows a cohort model with a summer start date.

Who Should Pursue This Program?
If you already hold a standard teaching certificate in an area other than special education and would like to pursue your New Jersey certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities, this fully accredited program is for you.

There is a high demand for skilled teachers of students with disabilities, and our graduates are employed locally, nationally, and globally. Those who don’t continue to teach have often pursued careers in educational research and/or curriculum development or have gone on to doctoral programs.

- SPED 501: Students with Disabilities in Our Schools
- EDUC 614: Creating and Sustaining Inclusive Classroom Communities
- SPED 612: Assessment, Planning, and Methods for Inclusive Instruction
- SPED 626: Curriculum Design for Individuals with Severe Disabilities
- SPED 617: Graduate Special Education Practicum (1 credit: can be broken into two .5 credit classes)
- EDUC 513: Collaboration and Consultation for Instruction and Transition Planning
- SPED 522: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for Interventions
- SPED 521: Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology
