Who Should Pursue This Program?
This program is ideal if you already have your teaching license and want to be certified to teach English as a second language.
Careers
Many graduates teach internationally or hold supervisory positions in ESL, bilingual/bicultural education, and world languages; work as researchers or curriculum developers; and pursue further studies in areas such as education leadership, international education, elementary education, linguistics, education psychology, and literacy.
Admission Requirements
- An earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, college, or other approved institution.
- The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) was taken within the last five years. See test waiver information.
- A completed online application.
- Current resume.
- Two strong letters of recommendation (e.g., unequivocal endorsements and letters from supervisors familiar with the applicant’s work are weighted favorably).
- Personal essay.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants for whom English is a second language and who have limited experience working/learning in an English language environment.
- Applicants must also meet the specific admission requirements of their selected certificate programs.
Program Requirements
All students who complete the TESL Certificate program will receive the TCNJ diploma and the Certificate of Qualification (CQ), which is issued to U.S. citizens and non-citizens and verifies the completion of TCNJ’s teacher preparation program. Although the CQ is not a teaching license from the State of New Jersey (not accepted by national or provincial schools), it is recognized by international schools and their accrediting agencies. It allows candidates to teach within the international school community outside of the U.S.
