At a Glance
Explore the world and your place in it through the study of language. Study Spanish and prepare for life and work as a global citizen, learning to communicate across languages and cultures. This program’s rich curriculum is integrated with extensive cultural immersion: trips, speakers, festivals, performances, and study abroad. You’ll be mentored and guided by faculty members from more than 12 countries speaking as many languages. Together, we create a dynamic community reflective of our world: complex, multicultural, and interconnected.

Accelerated/Dual-Degree Program Options
Get a jumpstart and enter the workforce with a master’s or professional degree. Accelerated options get you there faster and more affordably through fewer semesters of classes. Dual degrees offer a streamlined path to earning two degrees, often with direct admission to the graduate portion.
ESL/Bilingual Education
Spanish + ESL/Bilingual Education, BA/MEd
First-year applicants can gain direct admission to this five-year (4+1) accelerated bachelor’s to master’s program.
Medicine
Spanish + Medicine, BA/MD
First-year applicants can gain direct admission to New Jersey Medical School in this Seven-Year Medical Program (3+4).

TCNJ has a 100% placement rate for Spanish education graduates in competitive positions across the state. All Spanish education majors applying for teaching jobs in Spanish receive multiple job offers, and many of our graduates teach in World Language Model Programs.
Study Abroad
Gaining global experience and perspective through immersion in other languages and cultures is integral to our program. You can explore a variety of study-abroad opportunities in Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain (Barcelona, Granada, Madrid, Sevilla, Toledo, and Valencia), Argentina (Buenos Aires), Chile (Valparaíso), Costa Rica (San José), Peru (Lima), and many other fascinating places.
The college offers unique study opportunities at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Vina del Mar, Chile, as well as faculty-led programs in and around Madrid, Spain, at Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
You can choose a credit-bearing option offered directly by TCNJ or one of many third-party programs provided through TCNJ’s Arlotto Family Center for Global Engagement.
If you are an inclusive education and Spanish dual major, you can complete seven weeks of your student teaching requirement at an international school through TCNJ’s Global Student Teaching program.
To continue your studies in Spanish, you can pursue a master’s degree through our partner institution at the University of Alcalá in Spain. If you are interested in TCNJ’s accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree in ESL/bilingual education, you can take summer courses at the Nova School of Business & Economics in Portugal.
Heritage Spanish-Speaker Programming
If you were raised speaking Spanish, you can begin your major or minor with a course designed specifically for you. This learning environment, with an emphasis on the Hispanic experience in the United States, is tailored for students who want to develop fluency and poise, strengthen their writing skills, and raise their proficiency to a more professional level.
The Spanish program at TCNJ offers exciting classes from beginning to advanced levels. Bilingual students can also take Spanish for Heritage Speakers. You are strongly encouraged to study in a Spanish-speaking country for at least one semester.
Student Organizations
The Spanish Club meets regularly and plans exciting activities for its members and the campus community. TCNJ also houses a chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish National Honor Society, which has been recognized for its excellence and the achievements of its student members.

Our Spanish faculty hail from many countries and are committed to providing quality, student-engaged instruction in Spanish. Dedicated faculty members mentor students throughout their studies.
Spanish and ESL/Bilingual Education
This accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree program combines a major in Spanish with English as a Second Language (ESL) to address the critical shortage of world language and ESL teachers in New Jersey. Graduates will be certified to teach Spanish and ESL.
