At a Glance
Study finance and deepen your understanding of how the strategic allocation of resources like stocks and bonds can increase value for an individual or an organization. Our finance program teaches students to analyze financial data and market trends — and their ramifications — to make sound investment decisions. You’ll undertake core business courses, upper-level courses across business disciplines, and highly focused finance courses. Classes are small, discussion-based, and led by faculty who bring the insights of professional finance careers to the classroom.

Accelerated/Dual-Degree Program Options
Get a jumpstart and enter the workforce with a master’s degree. Accelerated options get you there faster and more affordably through fewer semesters of classes. Dual degrees offer a streamlined path to earning two degrees, often with direct admission to the graduate portion.

Careers
As a finance graduate, you’ll be equipped to pursue a successful career in banking, business valuation, financial analysis, financial planning, investments, or wealth management. Many finance majors land jobs through internships, the TCNJ Career Center, or networking with finance faculty and alumni.
Our finance majors have consistently earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional designations. Many graduates also choose to continue their education in graduate programs for law, health services, statistics, public service, accounting, and business.

Course Sequence
The finance program builds on a strong core of courses across the business curriculum. After an introductory course in finance, you will complete a course in investments and a yearlong cycle of courses in corporate financial management. The investment class uses materials from the professional certified financial (CFP) designation. Corporate financial management courses combine financial theory, cases, and database management with MBA-level texts. The program’s electives let you pursue personal interests in finance. Seniors are provided with finance capstone experiences — completing either a thesis or a business valuation project. Coursework, certification, and workshops in the Financial Learning Center with the Bloomberg Terminal add to your practical skills.
Internships
Finance majors participate in a variety of internship opportunities. Recent placements include American Express Financial Advisors, Bank of America, Bloomberg Financial Services, CIT Group, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase & Co., KPMG, Merck, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Herbert B. Mayo Student Investment Fund
Students may participate in the Herbert B. Mayo Student Investment Fund. The fund is not a “mock stock market game” but a management portfolio valued at more than $800,000. Students make buy-and-sell decisions to increase returns or improve the fund’s asset allocation and risk management. The fund was initially created by a faculty member’s gift and alumni contributions.
Mayo Business Plan Competition
Open to all students, the Mayo Business Plan Competition entails teams of two to four students who submit business plans that alumni and other business professionals judge. Finance majors have participated in the competition every year since its inception. Three teams of finalists receive a total of $60,000 in prize money.
The Financial Learning Center
The Financial Learning Center houses TCNJ’s Bloomberg Terminal, which provides detailed financial data and news on stock and bond markets. The terminal — widely used by financial professionals around the world — is used for class projects, independent student research, and the Student Investment Fund. You can also complete training in Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals, Bloomberg MarketConcepts (BMC), and ESG courses to prepare for your career.
Study Abroad
Study abroad through TCNJ’s relationships with colleges and universities in more than 50 countries, with opportunities for a full semester or a shorter term in summer and winter. By studying abroad, you can better understand yourself and the interrelationship of business culture globally, increase your intercultural communication skills, and explore a cultural setting that may include visits to art museums; historic sites; and foreign businesses, governments, and authorities.
CFA Institute-Affiliated University
Our finance program is part of the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program, which recognizes academic institutions incorporating some CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge topics into their curriculum.
